Run 004 - The Tree Streets

January 6, 2023

My regular weekly run with Jerry was postponed from Tuesday to today and he agreed to do one of these mapped runs with me.  We started from the usual place, across from Senior High School, and ran north, hitting all the “tree streets” above Pioneer Park.  They have names such as Ash, Spruce, Pine, etc.  Here’s the map:

It was about 40 degrees and no wind so I was quite comfortable in shorts and a double layer of long-sleeved t-shirts.  I want to take interesting photos along the way and while this may be in poor taste (OK, pun intended) this was the first thing I saw, just a block or two into the run.

No, I didn’t stage that.

We zigged and zagged our way along the route, stopping for the occasional map check.  The map did note that there were three streets to cover in that first block but in reality there are only two.  I’ve read that some maps are intentionally inaccurate to catch people who copy the maps without permission.

Up on the tree streets, just below the university, Jerry pointed this out.  Note, the car is not just parked facing the wrong way, it is pointed downhill.  I’ll let you study that one for a bit but here’s a hint: the driver probably did not major in physics.

Nearing the end of the run, we turned up 2nd St. West and saw this down the alley:

Jerry noted that it’s located in the rear of the property.

I did grab a photo of Jerry running in front of me, something I do on our weekly runs.

When we got back to Grand Avenue, we saw some law enforcement action nearby. Here’s a photo with the First Interstate building, the tallest in Montana, in the background.

The map software I used to lay out the route predicted a 7.39 mile run.  My GPS watch indicates 6.95.  I’ll call it a 7-miler.
