Run 058 - Southside Cleanup

April 29, 2023

No, we didn’t pick up the trash.  That was last weekend with the Rim Runners trail cleanup.  Today was the Saturday morning run from the Y and the “clean up” was to run a few streets on the Southside that we hadn’t done yet.  It probably amounted to a mile of the 6 that me, SHelley, Terese, and Katie ran.  It was an interesting route due to the stuff we saw along the way.  The course plan:

An emergency situation at the rescue mission.

An interesting fence.

What was tied up here?

A dead duck on a cushion.

The Vegas motel, the nearby site of a shooting the other day

And some other scenery.

I found 6 cents.

A mighty fun run.

Run 057 - Forest Park, Part 1

 April 28, 2023

I had doctor’s appointment for my annual checkup at 8:45am so I thought I’d squeeze in a run before that.  I headed out at 6:30am to start working on the nearby Forest Park subdivision.

This neighborhood is a bit “upscale” and very quiet so it was pleasant enough, even at the 34 degrees that it was.  It’s full of curvy streets and easy to get stuck in there so a map is a handy thing to have.  Some photos:

I’ll have to go back and get the streets I still have to do there.

Run 056 - More leftovers

April 26, 2023

It’s a Wednesday evening run with the RIm Runners heading out from Angry Hanks microbrewery and I looked over our options and just decided to do the traditional route with a few minor changes.  The orange lines indicate the roads I hadn’t covered yet.

Shelley was willing to do it with me so it wasn’t until we headed up on Rimview Drive that we got into new territory.  And it was a hill.

We got to the top and I shot some more photos.

We made it back to Hanks and had a beer before calling it an early night.

Run 055 - Some little pieces

April 26, 2023

Wanted to resume my normal Tuesday route with running partner Jerry, last week we went up Myers Trail.  There would be little in the way of new streets on this route until we came down from the airport and hit the intersection of 27th and Rimrock.  There we’d have the opportunity to clean up the triangle of that intersection.

However, we were trying to outrun a thunderstorm and didn’t want to get caught in a lightning strike so we only did the Yucca Street and the the two dead ends shown to the left on the map above.  We made it back just as the sky opened up and it became hailing.

This week we returned to the Myers Route.  Before we left I’d noticed that I hadn’t run 13th West from about the BBWA canal to Rimrock so instead of doing our normal cut through Veterans Park we go that box checked.

Up on Myers trail it was nice to see that the cut I’d made the week before on the trail was still intact.  The hillside had obliterated the trail and it was a slippery mess to get by there so I’d gone up there with my digging bar and done some improvements.  Here’s a photo from last week.

It was a beautiful day.

When we got to that intersection of 27th and Rimrock, we did a loop around it and then headed west on Rimrock to get a small portion of it to Normal Drive.

We stopped for a look at a sculpture on the university campus and the newly filled BBWA canal before finishing up the run.

Lots of miles and probably only a mile of new roads on this run.

Run 054 - More Southside

April 21, 2023

It’s a Saturday morning run and, as usual, the numbers are dominated by the walkers leaving me and Shelley to run my mapped route on our own.

It’s really the same area as last week but this time we are running the west/east streets.  There really isn’t much of a tale to tell.  Just interesting houses, churches, and barking dogs.  Oh, and I forgot my watch so I had to use the MapMyRun app on my phone.  It’s an OK app but really hammers battery usage but I do like the squiggly detail that the GPS on the phone records.  The watch isn’t so accurate.

Waiting for the train:

And for the record:

Some final thoughts
