Run 072 - The Overpass

It’s been raining.  A lot. All night.  More on the way.  It’s Saturday morning and time for the Rim Runners group run.  It’s a pretty fair-weather group as it’s not uncommon for me to run alone, especially in the winter or on days like today when it’s raining.  I headed down there anyway but with an alternate plan.  It was only a drizzle when I left home but by the time I neared Senior High School it was a soaking rain so I turned on 5th and headed south to “The Overpass.”

The Overpass is where Laurel Road goes over the railroad track at 6th Ave. West and becomes Montana Ave.  It’s two lanes in each direction with no pedestrian access so it’s a road I’ve been wondering how I can run safely.  At our Wednesday run, Brad said that it was under construction and only had one lane in each direction.  Perfect.

I parked nearby on Cline Ave. and ran east on the road that goes under the overpass and connects to Montana Ave.  When I got there, I crossed over and ran on the westbound side of the overpass on the right lane which was closed.  Some photos from along the way.

When I got to the bottom, I did a u-turn but came back on the side road that goes back under the overpass and connects to State Ave.  A bit further up, the 6th St. underpass and State Street intersection is undergoing a major rebuild.

The underpass itself is a bit flooded but a few car were venturing through.

It was a short run back to my car to finish the shortest run I’ve done in a long time but it wasn’t about distance today but checking off The Overpass from my to do list.

Run 071 - West End Looping

After Wednesday night’s run, Shelley said she wanted to do a run on Friday morning since it looks like rain for the regular Saturday morning run.  I set up a course and we agreed to meet at 5:30am on 38th Street where we’ve met up for many of our early morning runs.  Here’s the map:

We started right at 5:30am and did all those out and backs on little dead ends.  As usual, I like to take photos along the way to both show what the course looks like and of things that look interesting, like this old car.

This street doesn’t go through because of an irrigation canal but there is a bridge.

Shelley thought that the entryway of this place looked like a hotel.

These folks get the daily paper.  It’s become so small there’s not much left to paper a bird cage.

Run 070 - Behind Costco

The Yellowstone Rim Runners did the usual 3rd Wednesday night run from Canyon Creek Brewery and it gave me the opportunity to run some streets in the commercial/retail area south of King Avenue, south of Costco.  This is a really busy area and the route I planned meant running a bit on King which is one of the busiest streets in the city.

I didn’t have to go alone as Shelley, Martina, and Brad were happy to go along and make sure that Brad and I didn’t lollygag.  Here’s my planning map.

Rain was predicted and we only saw a few drops but had some beautiful skies as a backdrop to the scenery.  Our first scenic point of interest is the sink hole on Gabel Road.  The occurred a few weeks ago during some heavy rain.  It looks like it must have been encouraged by the culvert that runs under the road there.

Like I said, King Ave. is a busy street.

We wound our way around the backstreets behind Costco and saw some young geese hanging out near on of the many ponds in the area.

We finished up that area and started our run back.  We saw that there is some progress on the new hotel/convention center that we think has been underway for several years on a site that used to be a movie theater.

Run 069 - West of Rose Park

Saturday mornings are usually a run with the Rim Runners but today is the Heart and Sole race so most of our runners will be there.  I have a previous engagement at 9am (car club) and also said I’d help setting up our booth for the after-race event so I went out a bit before 6am to pick up some street just south of where I live.  It was a beautiful morning so why not.  Here was my map:

I pretty much stuck to that route but had to add a bit on the east end of Avenue C that is part road, part parking lot for the park.  Some pictures to illustrate the run.

I’m not sure what to make of this on Avenue C, east of 24th West.

11 cents today although I’m not sure if that penny is negotiable.
